Welcome to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee’s On-Line Training Program. As one of the requirements of all persons wishing to work with rodents in research or teaching, you must successfully complete this on-line training program and an hands-on training session prior to handling any animals or entering the barrier facility. To arrange the hands-on session, please contact the Animal Facilities Manager at 469-5610. There are three separate on-line courses. Everyone must complete the Barrier Facility course. You may then choose to take either the course on rats or mice or both. It is recommended that you take all three courses even though there is much overlap in information presented in the rat and mouse courses. You must re-take only the Barrier Facility course every three years. At the end of each section, there is a quiz. Once you have successfully completed the quiz, you may move on to the next section. You must obtain a passing score of 80% or higher on each quiz to receive credit for this part of the training program. Completion of this training does not authorize you to conduct research or teaching with animals. You must first submit an Animal Protocol to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) for review and approval. Protocol application forms may be obtained from the Office of the IACUC (469-5619) or from the website of the Vice President for Research. You may not begin working with animals until the protocol has been approved by the IACUC and you have completed both the on-line and hands-on training. After completing the on-line and hands-on training programs, you will be issued a certificate of completion that you should keep for your records. When submitting an Animal Protocol to the IACUC for review, it is imperative that you use the most recent version of the form or the protocol may be returned without review.
